British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of access tunnels down to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
